WHAT TO EXPECT

WHAT TO EXPECT IN CLASS

Dance first. Think later. It's the natural order.
~Samuel Beckett
Each class allows you time to stretch your muscles, welcome and warm up your body in your own way. You're encouraged to "come to your senses" and become present in your body.

A guided inquiry into a particular theme follows the warm up phase. It allows for individual exploration as well as playful interaction with other dancers. We respect each other's journey on the dance floor and therefore don't talk except with our bodies. Moving may bring up emotions, some welcome, others not so. We invite it all in: good days and tough ones, heartbreak and joy and we keep on moving, curious about what will evolve, ready to embrace it all. The dance floor becomes a discovery zone where we get to know ourselves a little bit better.

Our dance inquiry is supported by a cycle of music which often starts out slow and internal, builds up momentum and ends in a settled and meditative state. There is an option at the end to pick up crayons and "let your fingers dance on paper" – drawing, writing, making marks. Or just keep on dancing till the end.

Each class is unique, each class is different. Everybody brings their own energy to it, there is a different group of dancers, different music, a different theme each week. Sometimes you will go away with great insights, other times you may "just" have a great dance.

TIPS FOR FIRST TIMERS

“Out beyond ideas of right and wrong doing, there is a field.
I will meet you there.”

~ Rumi
Keep hydrated - you might like to bring a water bottle
Wear loose, comfortable clothing, layers are recommended
We dance barefoot or with dance shoes only – no socks please as they can be slippery

This is for anyone who loves to dance and everyone who is too shy to dance but would like to give it a try. There are no steps to learn, but images, music and themes are offered for you to explore. A great variety of music and rhythms together with gentle but clear guidance will help you find your unique expression and creative potential.

You may let yourself be inspired by others and try out their moves. In the dance we are all teachers and we are all students.

Always listen to your body, don't do anything that hurts and remember to pace yourself!

If you don't like the music: Great! This is a chance to practice dealing with situations that you may not like. What do you feel?  Move that! Where do you feel it in your body? Keep moving and explore, find the beat, move your emotion and stay curious about what will happen next.

Come along just as you are and join others doing the same right alongside you!
Dance is for everybody.
I believe that the dance came from the people
and that it should always be delivered back to the people.

~ Alvin Ailey
